about

Carol Marlene Smith's creativity includes writing books of poetry, one of which is 'Old Hippie Poems'. The picture here, used with her permission, has been lifted from the book cover.

The song's lyrics reflect how I felt when reading this particular edition. Maybe there's a hint too [unintentional but consistent with the pandemic] of uncertainty, greyness and loss.

OLD HIPPIE POEMS

I see you’re still writing
I bought your book
Because I love the way you weave your words
This time I couldn’t help but notice
Some lines weren’t as sunny as the ones before

Whether days are long or short
They’re waiting to be filled
A bit of give and take, more pain
Some laughs and thrills
It doesn’t really matter if the bones get a little sore we still live

I don’t know what you were thinking
When you wrote the words
In ‘Old Hippie Poems’ and other rhymes
I followed all the twists and turns
Felt your scrapes and burns
Still, when all is said and done
When the walls close in we go looking for the sun

Look out your window
Spring’s almost here
Watch white turn to green almost overnight
When seasons change doors open
For new dreams waiting to come in

I don’t know what you were thinking
When you wrote the words
In ‘Old Hippie Poems’ and other rhymes
You had some things to sort out
So you wrote about truth and doubt
Still, when all is said and done
When the sky gets dark we go looking for the sun

I’ll tell you what I’m thinking
If you need a friend I’ll be near
Like a blanket on a favorite chair
I know you’re a loner
You’ve made that quite clear
So I’ll just hang around with the words you share

Don’t let the sunshine leave your words
Yeah, always keep a little sunshine in your words
